If you have a low spot in the yard that ponds during summer thunderstorms, a downspout that dumps onto the lawn, or a clue-soil yard that doesn’t drain well, a rain garden is the right answer. It catches stormwater, filters it back into the soil instead of running it into the street, and gives you a blooming native habitat in return.

Minnesota has a thriving rain-garden scene because our clay soils and heavy summer rains make stormwater management a real issue in most yards. Here’s how to size, site, and plant one, plus the specific Minnesota natives that thrive in the cycle of wet-and-dry a rain garden delivers.

How a rain garden works

A rain garden is a shallow depression (6–12 inches deep) planted with moisture-tolerant native plants. When it rains, runoff from roofs, driveways, and lawn flows into the garden, pools briefly, and drains through the plants’ deep roots within 24 – 48 hours.

If sized and built correctly: - It does not become a pond. Water drains through after rains. - It does not breed mosquitoes. Mosquitoes need standing water for 7–10 days to complete their cycle; well-built rain gardens drain in under 2 days. - It does not flood your foundation. Site it at least 10 – 15 ft from the house and it actually diverts water away from the foundation.

Sizing a rain garden

A good rule of thumb for Minnesota: the rain garden should be about 20–30% of the area of the roof/driveway/lawn draining into it.

Example: a downspout drains 1,000 sq ft of roof surface — a 250–300 sq ft rain garden is appropriately sized. If that’s impractical, split the flow with a splitter and install two smaller gardens.

Best sites

  • At least 10 ft from the foundation (15 ft is safer)
  • At least 25 ft from a septic field
  • Not on top of utility lines (call 811 before digging)
  • Full to partial sun is ideal for most rain-garden plants
  • Grade to direct water toward the garden naturally, or use a swale or extended downspout

The three zones

A properly designed rain garden has three planting zones based on how much water each receives.

Zone 1 (bottom / ponding)

The deepest part where water collects and holds longest. Plants here must tolerate 20-48 hours of standing water. Zone 2 (middle / slope)

The transitional area. Wet after rains, dry between them. Plants here need to tolerate fluctuating moisture. Middle-zone plants: - Liatris spicata (Blazing Star) - Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot) - Rosa palustris (Swamp Rose) - Anemone canadensis (Canada Anemone) - Aquilegia canadensis (Wild Columbine) - Chelone glabra (Turtlehead)

Zone 3 (edge / dry)

The outer rim, only briefly wet. Almost any native prairie plant works. Edge plants: - Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower) - Rudbeckia hirta (Black-Eyed Susan) - Schizachyrium scoparium (Little Bluestem) - Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Milkweed) - Agastache foeniculum (Anise Hyssop) - Solidago speciosa (Showy Goldenrod)

Construction

  1. Test drainage by digging a 12-inch-deep test hole and filling it with water. If it drains within 24 hours, good. If it doesn’t, amend heavily or add an underdrain.
  2. Excavate 6–12 inches deep, gently sloped sides.
  3. Amend clay soil with 2–4 inches of compost and coarse sand to improve infiltration if drainage is poor.
  4. Create an inlet where water enters — a runnel of river rock or a grassed swale. This prevents erosion.
  5. Create an overflow at the berm — a low notch that directs excess water away from the house in case of extreme events.
  6. Plant densely — 1-gallon specimens about 18–24 inches apart give quickest cover (and prevent weeds).
  7. Mulch with 2 inches of shredded hardwood or heavy compost. (Avoid fine mulch that floats.)

Maintenance

  • Year 1: water weekly if there’s no rain. Pull weeds aggressively. Plants are establishing deep roots.
  • Year 2+: nearly no supplemental water. One spring cleanup, one fall done-nothing-or-cut-back decision.
  • Inlet/outlet: clear debris after big storms and in spring. If the inlet gets clogged, water will reroute.

Rain garden permits and incentives

Most Minnesota cities encourage rain gardens through cost-share programs. Minneapolis, St. Paul, Edina, Minnetonka, Roseville, and many others run reimbursement programs through their watershed districts.

Examples: - Minss River Watershed reimburses up to $540 for a rain garden. - Nine Mile Creek Watershed (Hopkins, Edina, Minnetonka) reimburses up to 75% of cost. - Minnehaha Creek Watershed has regular rain-garden cost-share competitions. - Lawns to Legumes doesn’t explicitly reimburse “rain gardens” but covers the native plants that go in them.
