Why Is My Arborvitae Turning Brown? A Minnesota Diagnostic Guide
In the Twin Cities, brown arborvitae almost always comes down to five things: winter burn on the south and west sides, normal inner-needle drop in September and October, rabbit stripping the bottom two to three feet at the snow line, spider mites mottling the whole plant, or roots suffocating in wet clay. The part of the plant that browned and the month you noticed it will tell you which one you have.
Arborvitae is the most-planted privacy evergreen in Minnesota and, not coincidentally, the one we replace most often. It goes into the worst spots we have — open property lines, west-facing boulevards, the low corner of a clay yard that stays wet until June — then takes a Minnesota winter with its foliage fully exposed above the snow. A plant that would be trouble-free in a sheltered Ohio backyard is a maintenance problem in an open yard in Plymouth.
This guide is diagnostic, not decorative. It starts with a symptom-to-cause table you can read standing in front of the plant, works through each cause the way we see it in the field, and ends with the harder question: when a browned-out hedge is worth saving.

First, what arborvitae actually is
Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis), also called northern white cedar, is a dense, scale-leaved evergreen in the cypress family that is native to Minnesota and eastern North America and is the region's most widely planted privacy screen. Everything sold as Techny, Emerald Green, Holmstrup, North Pole, DeGroot's Spire, Technito, and American Pillar is a selected form of that one species.
One fact about it drives nearly every problem below: it keeps losing water through its foliage all winter, even when frozen soil stops the roots from resupplying it.
The diagnostic table: match the pattern to the cause
Two things narrow it down: which part of the plant is brown, and when you noticed it.

Winter burn: the number one cause in the metro
If your arborvitae browned between the last snow and Memorial Day, and the brown is worse on the south, southwest, or wind-facing side, it is winter burn. University of Minnesota Extension describes the mechanism plainly: winter sun and wind pull moisture out of evergreen foliage while frozen soil keeps roots from replacing it. Extension names arborvitae, yew, and hemlock as the species hit hardest, and notes recently transplanted plants suffer most.
On a Techny or Emerald Green hedge the foliage browns from the tip of each spray inward, the base of the spray often stays green, and the damage stops abruptly at the snow line because everything buried was insulated. That sharp horizontal line at old snow depth is the most useful confirmation there is.
Why it hits Twin Cities yards so hard
- February and March sun. The damage is not from cold — it is bright late-winter sun warming foliage while the ground is still frozen a foot down.
- Reflected heat. A hedge against a light south wall, a white garage, or open snow takes a double dose.
- Exposed property lines. The most common arborvitae site in Eden Prairie or Maple Grove is a wide-open back lot line with nothing upwind for 200 feet.
- Dry falls. A plant that goes into freeze-up with a dry root ball has no reserve.
What to do about it
Do not prune in March. Wait until mid-spring, when buds start to swell — brown foliage frequently has live buds behind it, and arborvitae will push new growth through a burned spray. Then test each questionable branch: if it bends it is alive, if it is dry and snaps it is dead. Prune back to living green tissue only. Arborvitae will not regenerate from bare brown wood, so never cut past the last live green foliage.
Prevention is a fall job. Water evergreens thoroughly through October until the ground freezes; Extension recommends easing off slightly in September to encourage hardening, then watering deeply in October. Burlap screens on the south and west help on exposed sites. Skip tight plastic wraps, which trap heat against the foliage.
The brown you should ignore: seasonal foliage drop
Every fall we get calls about arborvitae "dying from the inside." Almost none of them are. Evergreens shed their oldest foliage on a schedule, and on arborvitae that happens in September and October. University of Minnesota Extension's diagnostic key describes it exactly: older inner foliage turns golden to rust brown, with no spots, and drops. Iowa State Extension adds the test that settles it — on a healthy plant, the outer growth stays green.
So: brown inside, green outside, in fall, with no black spotting and no webbing means the plant is fine. A drought summer makes the shed heavier and more alarming, but it is still normal.
Rabbits and deer: the browning nobody warns you about
This is the failure we get called for most, and it is the reason we have stopped recommending arborvitae for open sites.
Rabbits work at the snow line. As snow packs and drifts higher they stand on it and eat foliage and bark at whatever height the surface gives them, working upward all winter. In April you find the bottom two to three feet stripped to bare stems with the clean, angled ends rabbits leave. Because arborvitae does not regenerate from old bare wood, that skirt never fills back in. If they chewed a complete ring of bark around the trunk, the plant is girdled and dies that summer.
Deer take the foliage above that. The Minnesota DNR's woodland habitat guidance lists white cedar — the same species as your landscape arborvitae — among deer's preferred winter foods. Rutgers Cooperative Extension's "Landscape Plants Rated by Deer Resistance" puts Thuja occidentalis in its worst category, Frequently Severely Damaged, while the junipers on that same list rate Seldom Severely Damaged or Rarely Damaged. That is a published rating gap between two plants sold for the same job.
Protection works, but only if you do it every year. Extension's guidance for rabbits is hardware cloth cylinders set about six inches off the trunk and extending 18 to 24 inches above the anticipated snow line — not above the ground. For deer, a well-built 6 to 8 foot fence is the only reliable exclusion; repellents such as Bobbex, Plantskydd, Liquid Fence, or Deer-Out help if reapplied every four to six weeks, October through April. Mites, scale, and the blights
Spruce spider mite
Spruce spider mite (Oligonychus ununguis) is the insect problem we find most often on Twin Cities arborvitae, and it is routinely misdiagnosed as drought. It is a cool-season mite: it feeds hard in late spring and again in early fall and goes quiet in July and August heat, so summer sprays hit nothing. Damage is fine yellow-to-bronze stippling across the whole plant, with silk webbing between the scale leaves when numbers are high.
Confirm before you spray. Hold white paper under a branch and rap the branch against it; mites show up as dust-sized specks that move and smear green. A hard hose-down every few days knocks populations back on a small hedge; horticultural oil or a labeled miticide handles a heavy infestation. Broad-spectrum insecticides make mite problems worse by killing predatory mites.
Fletcher scale
Fletcher scale produces small brown bumps at the base of the scale leaves, yellowing, premature drop, and sticky honeydew that turns black with sooty mold. If your arborvitae is sticky and wasps are working it in June, look for scale. Horticultural oil timed to crawler emergence is what works.
Leaf blight and tip blight
Leaf blight (Didymascella thujina) turns random sections tan to reddish brown with small black fruiting bodies visible by late summer, worst on lower branches in dense rows that stay wet. Pestalotiopsis blight turns branch tips yellow then dark brown and kills small twigs; it is an opportunist on plants already stressed by something else. Both are managed the same way — open the planting so it dries, stop overhead watering, prune out dead material, and fix the underlying stress. Planting a hedge tighter than the plant's mature width is the most common reason we see blight on young hedges.
Wet feet: root rot in Twin Cities clay
Arborvitae wants consistent moisture, which garden writing translates into "likes wet soil." It does not — it wants moist and drained. In the heavy clay most of the metro sits on, a low spot, a downspout outlet, or the base of a slope holds water long enough to suffocate roots, and root rot organisms including Phytophthora, Fusarium, and Rhizoctonia move in.
The pattern differs from winter burn: no clean sun-side geometry. The whole plant slowly goes dull, thins, and browns from the top down over a season or two, often while a neighbor 15 feet uphill in the same row looks perfect. Dig at the edge of the root ball — healthy roots are firm and light-colored, rotted roots are dark, soft, and slip apart between your fingers.
There is no spray for this. Test the site by digging a 12-inch hole, filling it with water, letting it drain, and filling it again; if the second fill still stands after 12 hours, do not plant an arborvitae there. Raise the bed six to eight inches, redirect downspouts, or change the plant.
Transplant shock and the watering mistake behind it
A newly planted arborvitae that browns evenly, top to bottom, in its first or second season almost always dried out at the root ball — and it usually happens on properties with in-ground irrigation running faithfully all summer.
A new root ball is a separate reservoir from the soil around it — dense nursery media sitting in clay. Lawn irrigation wets the clay and spreads laterally without ever saturating the root ball, so the plant stands in damp soil and dies of thirst.
Our standing guidance is 5 gallons per plant, once a week, for the first two full summers, delivered slowly at the base. Rainfall counts toward the weekly total. Year two matters as much as year one — Extension notes a newly planted shrub in Minnesota needs at least two growing seasons to establish. Scale up for larger balled-and-burlapped stock, and check by probing six inches down at the edge of the root ball a day later.
De-icing salt, dog urine, and the string trimmer
Three site problems produce brown that looks like disease.
- De-icing salt. UMN Extension describes two routes: spray from the road burning foliage directly, and sodium in the soil dehydrating roots while breaking down clay structure. The tell is browning from the tips down, dramatically worse on the road-facing side. Extension recommends keeping plantings at least 3 feet back from drives and walks and 7 feet from roadways. Arborvitae on a boulevard is a plant on borrowed time.
- Dog urine. High nitrogen and salt concentration burns foliage and roots. The signature is one brown patch at dog height on the traffic side of the one or two plants closest to a path — never the whole hedge.
- Mechanical damage. String trimmers and mowers girdle the thin bark at the base of young arborvitae. A plant that browns out entirely with no other symptom deserves a look at the trunk.
When to stop saving it and replant
Plenty of brown arborvitae recover completely. Winter burn on a healthy plant grows out in one or two seasons; mites, scale, and blight are treatable; transplant shock is fixable if you catch it early. What does not come back is structure.
Arborvitae produces new growth only from living green foliage, never from bare interior wood. A hedge with a permanently bald skirt from rabbits, a girdled trunk, or a dead side after a salt winter will not repair itself. At that point you are maintaining a screen with a permanent hole in it.
If you are replanting anyway, replant honestly. In a fenced yard with no rabbit runs and no deer, arborvitae is still the right answer — it fills faster and costs less per plant than the alternatives, and our breakdown is in the Techny arborvitae guide. Frequently Asked Questions
Will brown arborvitae turn green again? Fully brown, dry foliage will not turn green again, but the plant can push new growth from live buds behind it. Winter-burned arborvitae with green tissue at the base of the sprays usually recovers over one to two seasons. Bare interior wood never regrows — arborvitae only grows from living green tissue.
Should I prune brown arborvitae in early spring? No. Wait until mid-spring when buds swell, usually mid-May in the Twin Cities. University of Minnesota Extension advises against early pruning because buds are hardier than foliage and much brown-looking growth is still alive. Bend suspect branches — flexible is alive, dry and snapping is dead — then cut back only to living green foliage.
Why is my arborvitae brown on the bottom but green on top? That is almost always rabbits. They feed from the packed snow surface upward, stripping foliage and bark from the lower two to three feet each winter. Deer damage starts higher and looks torn rather than cleanly cut. Because arborvitae cannot regrow from bare wood, a rabbit-stripped skirt is permanent.
Is it normal for arborvitae to turn brown inside in the fall? Yes. Arborvitae sheds its oldest interior foliage every September and October. University of Minnesota Extension describes the normal pattern as older inner foliage turning golden to rust brown with no spots, then dropping. The confirmation is that outer growth stays green. A dry summer makes the shed heavier but not abnormal.
How do I tell winter burn from spider mites? Geometry and season. Winter burn is one-sided, shows on the south, southwest, or windward face in March through May, and often stops sharply at the old snow line. Can too much water kill an arborvitae? Yes, and in Twin Cities clay it is a common cause of decline. Arborvitae needs consistent moisture with good drainage, not saturated soil.
