The Twin Cities Privacy Hedge Buying Guide for 2026

The Twin Cities Privacy Hedge Buying Guide for 2026

Privacy is the number one reason Twin Cities homeowners come to us. Whether you're blocking a new neighbor's deck, screening a street view, or just creating a quiet pocket in your own yard, the right hedge does in three years what a fence can't do in twenty.

Here's how to think about your privacy hedge โ€” what we plant, how we space it, and the mistakes we see most often.

Step 1: Decide how much screening you need

Most people overshoot. A hedge that hits 12 feet tall blocks every second-story window of the house behind you. A hedge that hits 6โ€“8 feet blocks the line of sight from the deck or patio. Most homeowners actually need the second.

For full-height screens (10โ€“15 feet), our top picks are American Pillar Arborvitae, Sky Rocket Juniper, and Black Hills Spruce. For mid-height (6โ€“10 feet), look at Holmstrup Arborvitae or First Editions Technito Arborvitae.

Step 2: Match the species to the site

Three quick rules:

  • Sun all day: arborvitae and junipers thrive. Black Hills spruce is bulletproof.
  • Part shade: Canadian hemlock and yew are your friends. Most arborvitae will get thin and floppy in less than 6 hours of sun.
  • Wet soil or clay: Eastern white pine handles moisture better than most evergreens. Avoid junipers in wet feet.

Step 3: Space them right

This is where people lose money. The label says "12 feet wide at maturity." Most people then plant them 12 feet apart and end up with gaps for ten years.

For a tight privacy screen, space at 60โ€“70% of the plant's mature width. American Pillar gets 4 feet wide โ€” plant them 3 feet on-center for a wall-thick hedge. Holmstrup gets 5 feet wide โ€” plant 3.5 feet on-center.

Step 4: Buy the right size to start

For privacy, bigger isn't always better. A #5 Gallon plant establishes faster than a #15 because the smaller root system catches up quicker after transplant. A #10 or #15 gives you 2โ€“3 years of head start visually, but costs 4ร— as much per plant.

Our recommendation: #5 Gallon for budget privacy hedges, #10 or 5'BB for projects that need impact this year.

Step 5: Plan for the first 2 years

Every privacy plant we sell is Zone 4 hardy. But the first 18 months after transplant is when most plants are lost โ€” usually to drought, not cold. Water deeply every 7โ€“10 days from May through October the first two summers. After that, your hedge takes care of itself.

Add our optional Plant Survival Warranty at checkout โ€” coverage starts at $15 for a single plant. Without the warranty, plants are sold as-is.
