๐ฒPlants & Selection
Will the plants you sell really survive a Minnesota winter?
Yes โ that's our whole thing. Every plant we stock is proven for USDA zone 4bโ5a (Twin Cities metro). If it's not reliable in a typical Minnesota winter, we don't sell it. We lean toward zone 3 and 4 hardy plants to give a safety margin in unusually cold winters.
What zone is the Twin Cities?
Most of the Twin Cities metro is USDA zone 4bโ5a, with some urban heat-island pockets that behave closer to zone 5. Outer-ring suburbs and rural-edge areas are more typically zone 4b. We default to zone 4 hardiness as the minimum for everything we sell.
Do you sell Minnesota native plants?
Yes โ natives are a core focus of our catalog. We carry Eastern Larch (Tamarack), Canadian Hemlock, and we're expanding the native lineup with Red Twig Dogwood, Serviceberry, Ninebark, Nannyberry Viburnum, Swamp White Oak, Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Bee Balm, and more as the season progresses. Planting natives supports local pollinators and birds โ and they handle Minnesota weather without coddling.
Are your plants deer-resistant?
Some are highly deer-resistant (junipers, spruces, Russian cypress, pines), some are deer candy (arborvitae, yew). Each product page flags deer resistance from low to high. For high-pressure areas, look for our Deer-Resistant collection.

๐งPlanting & Care
When is the best time to plant in Minnesota?
Fall (mid-August through early October) is the ideal planting window for most shrubs and trees โ warm soil, cool air, and 6โ8 weeks to establish roots before ground freeze. Spring (late April through May) is the second-best window. Avoid midsummer planting when possible.
How do I water newly planted shrubs and trees?
Every new plant includes care instructions with a watering schedule. The short version: every 1โ2 days for the first two weeks, every 3โ4 days for the next month, then weekly for the rest of the first growing season. Stop watering 2โ3 weeks before ground freeze (typically late October).
Should I wrap my evergreens in burlap for winter?
First-year evergreens in windy or south-facing sites benefit from burlap wrap to prevent winter burn. After year one, most evergreens don't need wrapping. We provide guidance per plant.
๐งพOrders, Payments & Returns
What payment methods do you accept?
All major credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Shop Pay through our secure Shopify checkout.
Can I modify or cancel my order?
Yes, up to 48 hours before your scheduled delivery. After that, we've already pulled your plants and loaded the delivery run.
What if a plant is damaged on arrival?
If a plant arrives damaged, take a photo immediately and email hello@threetimbersmn.com. We'll replace or refund on the spot.
What if a plant dies the first year?
We stand behind healthy, properly cared-for plants. If a plant fails within the first growing season due to reasons beyond your control (e.g., a defect we missed), contact us and we'll replace it. For first-winter coverage, add our optional Plant Survival Warranty at checkout โ details on the warranty page.
